ArchitectureDC has featured McKay-Scheer Studio in its Spring 2026 issue. The article includes an interview with Principal Eric Hurtt on the renovation of the early 20th-century commercial building into a one-bedroom live-work residence for two artists in DC’s Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood.
“The building's history is unique, and as part of a historic district, there was never any discussion about tearing this building down and replacing it with a more conventional house. Nor would we have wanted to approach this project in that manner, ” says Principal Eric Hurtt.
“Not unlike the conversion of mills and other industrial structures into lofts and apartments, this conversion of a small-scale commercial structure into a home exemplifies how we can collectively reexamine our assumptions about what a home looks like and how we might use existing structures for other, unintended uses.”
